Summer Intern – Tia Monahan

Posted on: Thursday, June 28, 2012

Hi, my name is Tia Monahan and I am an intern with The Healing Center for the summer. My parents, grandparents, aunt, and cousins have been a part of The Healing Center from the beginning.  My aunt Kay (holding me in the picture) went to college with Kath, the Healing Center founder, and was a long time advisory board member and volunteer. Whether it was as clients or as volunteers or as donors, my family has always participated in events, and now I feel like it is my turn to help out any way I can.

I am a senior at The Bush School which has given me many opportunities to give back. Though I loved volunteering at Lifelong Aids Alliance or planting trees for Mountains to Sound, The Healing Center has always held a special place in my heart. When my aunt Kay passed away last December from a sudden struggle with Pancreatic Cancer, her friends and family here at The Healing Center supported our family and supported each other. It was amazing to see how many people she touched and affected, and I can only hope to give back a fraction of what the place that she loved so much and the people that she called family gave to us.

Through my time volunteering, I will be focusing on El Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead celebration, on November 2nd. I will be gathering research on El Día de los Muertos and from that research I will create blogs, Facebook posts, Twitter “tweets”, and emails surrounding the celebration in November. My goal is to get the word out about this amazing event, and to help The Healing Center bring as many people together as possible to celebrate and remember the memories of their loved ones through this centuries old Mayan holiday and tradition.
